How to prepare for NEET from Class 11
A practical way to start NEET preparation in Class 11: how to read NCERT Biology, handle Physics, and study at home without coaching.
The short version
Know NCERT Biology line by line, practise Physics numericals every week even if you dislike them, and revise constantly, because the volume is what makes NEET hard.
What makes NEET different
NEET leans closely on NCERT, particularly in Biology. The difficulty comes from volume and accuracy: there's a lot to remember, and small slips cost you marks. That changes how you should study compared with JEE.
Biology: read NCERT properly
- Read each chapter slowly, including the diagrams, tables and examples in the boxes.
- Make your own short notes only for what you keep forgetting. Rewriting the whole book is rarely a good use of time.
- Close the book and test yourself. Rereading feels productive, but the research doesn't back it. See our guide to active recall.
- Come back to Class 11 Biology all through Class 12, because it fades quickly if you leave it.
Physics: don't avoid it
Many NEET aspirants prefer Biology and put off Physics, then find it's holding back their score. Do a few numericals on most days instead of long sessions once in a while. Learn each formula alongside a question that uses it.
Chemistry: three different subjects
Treat them differently. Physical Chemistry needs regular practice like Physics. Organic needs reaction mechanisms understood, then revised. Inorganic is mostly NCERT and steady revision.
Studying at home without coaching
- Set a monthly chapter target, and tick chapters off in a notebook as you finish them.
- Do MCQs after every chapter, since NEET is an MCQ exam and speed comes from practice.
- Take timed full-length tests once you've covered enough of the syllabus, and review every wrong answer.
- Find one person or group to ask doubts, or use a doubt solver, so that you don't get stuck alone.
