Probability formulas

Event and probability rules for Class 11. It's short, and the set language used here carries into Class 12 probability.

Rules

Probability of an event
P(E)=favourable outcomestotal outcomes\displaystyle P(E) = \frac{\text{favourable outcomes}}{\text{total outcomes}}

When outcomes are equally likely.

Range
0≤P(E)≤1\displaystyle 0 \le P(E) \le 1
Complement
P(E′)=1−P(E)\displaystyle P(E') = 1 - P(E)
Addition rule
P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)\displaystyle P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cap B)
Mutually exclusive events
P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)\displaystyle P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B)
Only A, not B
P(A∩B′)=P(A)−P(A∩B)\displaystyle P(A \cap B') = P(A) - P(A \cap B)

Where students slip up

  • Adding probabilities without checking whether events overlap.
  • Mixing up mutually exclusive and independent. Exclusive events can't happen together, while independent ones don't affect each other.
