Equilibrium formulas

Equilibrium constant, pH, buffer and solubility formulas. Ionic equilibrium is formula-heavy, and a sheet like this helps a lot here.

Chemical equilibrium

Equilibrium constant
Kc=[C]c[D]d[A]a[B]b\displaystyle K_c = \frac{[C]^c[D]^d}{[A]^a[B]^b}
Kp and Kc
Kp=Kc(RT)Δng\displaystyle K_p = K_c(RT)^{\Delta n_g}
Reaction quotient
Q<K:forward,Q>K:backward,Q=K:at equilibrium\displaystyle Q < K: \text{forward}, \quad Q > K: \text{backward}, \quad Q = K: \text{at equilibrium}

Acids and bases

pH
pH=−log⁡[H+]\displaystyle \text{pH} = -\log[\text{H}^+]
Water
Kw=[H+][OH−]=10−14\displaystyle K_w = [\text{H}^+][\text{OH}^-] = 10^{-14}

At 298 K, so pH + pOH = 14.

Conjugate pairs
Ka×Kb=Kw\displaystyle K_a\times K_b = K_w
Weak acid
α=KaC,[H+]=KaC\displaystyle \alpha = \sqrt{\frac{K_a}{C}}, \quad [\text{H}^+] = \sqrt{K_aC}

For small α.

Acidic buffer
pH=pKa+log⁡[salt][acid]\displaystyle \text{pH} = \text{p}K_a + \log\frac{[\text{salt}]}{[\text{acid}]}
Basic buffer
pOH=pKb+log⁡[salt][base]\displaystyle \text{pOH} = \text{p}K_b + \log\frac{[\text{salt}]}{[\text{base}]}

Solubility

AB type salt
Ksp=s2\displaystyle K_{sp} = s^2
AB₂ type salt
Ksp=4s3\displaystyle K_{sp} = 4s^3
General salt
AxBy:Ksp=xxyysx+y\displaystyle A_xB_y: \quad K_{sp} = x^xy^y s^{x + y}
Precipitation
forms when the ionic product>Ksp\displaystyle \text{forms when the ionic product} > K_{sp}

Where students slip up

  • Including pure solids and liquids in K. Their concentrations aren't written.
  • Assuming K changes with concentration or a catalyst. Only temperature changes it.
  • Using pH + pOH = 14 at temperatures other than 298 K.
